Why the Kingdom Hearts " Spinoffs" are Necessary Part 1
Kingdom Hearts III is one of the most anticipated games of all time and people have been waiting ever since 2006 for its release, and finally we got a release year for 2018. The community is very excited for 2018. But there are some in the community that have not played all of the games, and those people argue that playing all of the games is not necessary. They only consider Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 as the main installments, and all of the other games are just considered “ spinoffs” to them. Then there is another group in the community that do consider every game in the series as a main installment except for the canon mobile game Kingdom Hearts Union X Cross. Both of these groups of people are very wrong, EVERY game matters in the Kingdom Hearts story, EVERY game is essential to the story. First ill talk about the games in between I and II which are Chain of Memories and 358/2 days, then the prequel games which are Birth By Sleep and Kingdom Hearts Union X cross/ Unchained X/ X Chi ( different versions and renames), and finally the games after II which are Re:coded, Dream Drop Distance, and 0.2 Birth By Sleep a Fragmentary Passage. If you have not played all of the games then you are not ready for Kingdom Hearts III. A very good example that proves my point is Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories which was one of the 2 games in between Kingdom Hearts 1 and II.
Many gamers were very confused when Kingdom Hearts II released because the game starts with a new protagonist called Roxas which nobody knew about. And Sora, Donald, and Goofy were all asleep and many events had happened like Riku’s alignment with Diz and many more. All of these people that were confused had not played Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories which was the DIRECT sequel to the original Kingdom Hearts, and it explained why Sora, Donald and Goofy were asleep and all the events that occurred in Castle Oblivion with the Organization XIII members. Also in KH CoM, in Reverse/Rebirth ( Riku’s) story it tells us everything that happened to Riku after KH and why he is aligned with Diz. Now about Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days which is another game that takes place in between Kingdom Hearts I and II, and during/after Chain of Memories. This game is Roxas’s story, and it tells us about Roxas’s time in the organization XIII. We also get more info on every member of the organization and about the organizations ambitions. It also further explains Roxas’s and Xion’s connection to Sora, and the friendship between Roxas, Xion, and Axel. And also why Roxas left the organization and what happened to him after he fought Riku and lost, and the finale of 358/2 days directly leads to KH II. So if you play KH, Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days youll understand II.
Now let's talk about the Prequel games, let's start with Birth By Sleep ( BBS) which takes place 10 years before the original game. The game has 3 protagonists Ventus, Terra, and Aqua and it's a very tragic story because no matter what you know the fates of the protagonists. This game explains why Sora and Riku have keyblades and why they were chosen, it explains the Keyblade itself better, it finally lets us see who the true Villain of the series is which is Xehanort. Ansem ( KH 1 Villain) and Xemnas ( KH II villain and leader of organization XIII) were just parts of Xehanort, they were his heartless and Nobody. BBS also showed us how everything began, it gives us a hint about the Keyblade War over Kingdom Hearts and the X-Blade. Birth By Sleep i'll admit is actually considered a main entry by the vast majority of the community but there is still some people that consider it a spin off.
And because of all of the events that happened in Birth By Sleep, and because of the fates of its protagonists we know that Sora is going to have to save Ventus, Terra, and Aqua. Skipping Birth By Sleep is the worst thing a person that is anticipating Kingdom Hearts III could do. They would be missing out on all of the info that I was talking about above. And one big thing about Kingdom Hearts is that nobody really knows what Kingdom Hearts itself is. But Birth By Sleep and 358/2 days have given us a bit of info and hints about what it is. There is also some other characters from Birth By Sleep and the other games mentioned previously that will make a comeback in Kingdom Hearts III for the final showdown, so its going to be crucial to know who all of them are. In my next blog I will continue to discuss this same topic but this time I will talk about the remaining games which are Kingdom Hearts Union X Cross/ X Chi/ X Back cover/ Unchained X ( Various names for the mobile game), Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded, and the short Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth By Sleep A Fragmentary Passage and why they are essential to play for the story, and why they're main games also.
