The Symbolism in Tite Kubo’s BLEACH
Bleach is an action/adventure shonen manga and anime written and drawn by Tite Kubo. It’s the story about a guy named Ichigo Kurosaki who has the ability to see and interact with ghosts, he later gets soul reaper powers and he battles supernatural threats. BLEACH may seem like a regular battle anime but it is full of christian symbolism.
There is a place where all souls go after they die, and that place is the Soul Society, the soul society symbolises heaven. The soul reapers in BLEACH are actually angels that guard the soul society and that guard humans just like guardian angels. In BLEACH the ruler of everything, the being that keeps everything together is called the Soul King and his name is Reio. The soul king symbolizes god. The equivalent of hell in the bible in BLEACH is Hueco Mundo, where are of the Hollows ( demons) reside. These symbolisms are the simple ones and they are ones that everybody can notice, however the ones im about to list are more in depth. The main villain of BLEACH, Sosuke Aizen is very very symbolic. Aizen used to be one of the top soul reapers for hundreds of years. However the whole time he had a very rebellious ambition, and that ambition was to become the new soul king. He made some allies of a few other Soul Reapers, and together they plotted a rebellion to take out the soul society and the soul king. Does this story sound familiar? This is the exact story of Satan. Satan was god’s right hand angel, and he had everything, but he wished for god’s power. So Satan conspired with other angels to take over heaven, and they eventually lost and they were kicked out of heaven. Aizen at the end of the Soul Society arc was revealed to be a traitor and he and his two accomplices Gin and Tosen left the soul society and went to Hueco Mundo (hell). Aizen then raised an army of hollows ( demons) and went to war against the Soul society to overthrow the current order. He went to Earth to get a key to be able to enter the Soul Kings palace in the Soul Society. After all of the bloodshed Aizen was defeated and he was banished to a jail for many many years called Muken, and it is located in the lowest depths of the soul society. Another similarity to Satan is Aizens power, Aizens zanpakuto ( sword) has the ability to completely hypnotize his opponents senses, and he creates illusions and lies. All his opponent has to do is look at his zanpakuto in its Shikai state. Satan in the bible is shown to make lies to deceive people , and he makes false illusions. The devil has the power of deception just like Aizen.

Ichigo the main protagonist is a nephilim which is a child made from a human and an angel. Ichigos dad is a Soul reaper, and his mom is a quincy, and quincy's are human. Quincies are very symbolic, they have christian and nazi symbolism. Let's start with the main and first quincy. The first Quincy is a man named Yhwach ( Juha Bach) who is also one of the most overpowered villains ive seen ever. Yhwach is the son of the soul king, and we can make the connection that he symbolises Jesus since his dad Reio is the soul king.
Yhwach as a baby could not function at all since he was deaf, blind etc but he had the ability to give out his soul to people and his soul would heal people’s own wounds and souls. Everybody would hold Yhwach as a baby and receive his soul in return, though even if their wounds would heal they would not live for a very long time. Yhwach would absorb their souls and he would slowly be able to function, later he was able to hear and see and basically be able to function as a human being. Jesus in the bible could heal people just by touching them just like Yhwach. Yhwach is a peaceloving man and he calls all of his subordinates and sons just like Jesus. Yhwach is the progenitor of all quincies, all quincies carry a piece of Yhwach’s soul within them, just like every human carries god within them.
Yhwach also has about 27 ridiculous powers called Schrifts that he hands out to people and subordinates. One of these powers is miracles, he can make miracles happen. He also becomes an omnipotent being with the power of the almighty which is the power to see into the future and change it how he wants. Yhwach also has a power called Auswahlen which calls back all of the souls of the quincies into his body. It symbolises the rapture in the bible since in revelations when the rapture happens all of the people god choose go with him when he calls. Auswahlen is German for holy selection. Now the rest of the Quincies symbolize Jesus’s apostles from the bible because they are the ones that follow Yhwach and he calls them his sons. Tite Kubo really took inspiration from Christianity during the time he was writing BLEACH as we could see from all of the symbolism in his series.
